Viva Las Vegas!
By Barbara Gibson, ABC | September 15th, 2008
Landed in Las Vegas Saturday evening, after a long day of flying, to be greeted at Baggage Claim by IABC member Mandi McDonald (holding a sign with my name on it, made me feel very special!). Brave girl that she is, Mandi had agreed to have me as a guest in her home for my stay here, and we had a fab weekend.
I couldn’t come to Vegas without seeing an Elvis, so Mandi, boyfriend Matt (who, by the way, is a great cook), and I set off on an Elvis Quest on Sunday morning. After learning that the Elvis-a-rama Museum was closed, we headed for the Imperial Palace to begin our search. Pictures of Elvis were easy to find, but live ones were nowhere to be seen. It seemed that none of the Elvis shows play on Sundays. Is that because Elvis was deeply religious, we wondered? Following a hot tip from a doorman, we joined the stream of tourists walking along The Strip. But alas, no Elvis could be found. Eventually the heat of the mid-day sun began to make us question the importance of our quest, but even as we turned back, we searched.
In one casino, we thought we’d finally struck gold when we saw the telltale boufant hairdo, but it turned out to be just a pit boss with big hair, who got a bit grumpy when I tried to get a picture.
Disappointed, having come full circle, we made our way back through the casino in The Imperial Palace, and suddenly, in front of us an Elvis appeared, part of a show that included Little Richard, Bette Midler, Alice Cooper, the Blues Brothers and other star-alikes. My quest was complete – I came to Vegas and got a picture of a live Elvis! I’ll post photos from my iPhone via Utterz as soon as I’m where the phone signal is strong enough. In the meantime, if you want to get in the mood, here’s a little musical preview: http://blip.fm/profile/Barb_G/blip/315949
We had dinner last night with chapter prez Pete Codella, and this morning I’m at Mandi’s office (she does marketing for the City of Henderson’s Parks & Recreation dept), hanging out until time for the chapter luncheon event. The trip is off to a great start. Massive thanks to Mandi and Matt (and cats Rocki and Thumper) for being such great hosts!
